Stephen Lang Discusses His Faith and Role as Prophet Samuel in ‘House of David’
Stephen Lang, known for his iconic roles in James Cameron's Avatar films, is now starring in House of David, an epic biblical series. The show, which premieres on Prime Video with its first three episodes, follows the biblical story of David (played by Michael Iskander), who rises to become king of Israel after King Saul (Ali Suliman) succumbs to pride. Lang portrays Prophet Samuel, who, guided by God, anoints David as king.
Lang spoke about how he approached the role of Samuel, emphasizing that his involvement came from a deeply spiritual perspective, one where faith plays a significant role. Though not overtly religious, Lang shared his respect for religion and its moral teachings.
“I’m not particularly religious, but I am schooled in religion and I have great respect for it,” Lang explained. “I come from a mixed religious background, but this story is important to me because it allows me to explore the Jewish part of myself. My mother was Irish Catholic, but I had a bar mitzvah. As Moshe Dayan said, 'If you feel like a Jew, you’re a Jew.'”
Lang also emphasized the universal nature of House of David, noting that the story is meaningful to people across various cultures and religions. “It’s a universal story for everyone,” he said. Lang also finds significance in playing Samuel, a revered figure in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, whose actions ignite the biblical narrative.
“Samuel is the catalyst for the story,” Lang explained. “He is highly regarded as a prophet and seer in three of the world’s major religions. I love playing a character who is honored by such diverse faiths, and it’s an opportunity to bring people together, even if they sometimes disagree.”
House of David, directed by Jon Erwin, Jon Gunn, Alexander La Roche, and Michael Nankin, also stars Ayelet Zurer as Queen Ahinoam, Indy Lewis as Mychal, and Martyn Ford as Goliath. The show debuts with its first three episodes on Prime Video, with new episodes releasing weekly.
