Who is Amy Gleason, the Acting Administrator of DOGE Appointed by the White House?
The White House has clarified that while Elon Musk plays a role in overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), he does not hold the official title of DOGE head.
Amy Gleason, 53, brings a wealth of experience in healthcare technology and government service to her new position as DOGE’s acting administrator. The White House announced her appointment after weeks of speculation and inquiries about the agency’s leadership. Despite Musk's involvement, the White House confirmed he does not legally head DOGE, following a court filing that clarified he is not a U.S. government employee and lacks authority over cost-cutting initiatives.
Background of Amy Gleason
Before taking on this role, Gleason held a position at the United States Digital Service (USDS) from 2018 to 2021, an agency founded under former President Barack Obama to enhance government technology. She worked across both the Trump and Biden administrations, collaborating with the White House on the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on projects with the CDC and CMS.
After her time at the USDS, Gleason transitioned to the private sector, becoming the chief product officer at two healthcare startups in Nashville, Tennessee — Russell Street Ventures and Main Street Health. Both companies, led by healthcare entrepreneur Brad Smith, focus on improving care for underserved patient populations, and both have connections to the DOGE initiative. She also ran her own consulting firm, Gleason Strategies, during this time.
Additionally, Gleason served as vice president for research at the Cure JM Foundation, an organization focused on juvenile myositis, a rare autoimmune disease affecting her daughter. She also co-founded Care Sync, a Florida-based telehealth company, further enhancing her expertise in healthcare technology.
Gleason's Return to Government and Role at DOGE
In January 2025, Gleason returned to the government as a senior adviser at the renamed US DOGE Service, shortly after Trump's second inauguration. Her promotion to acting administrator was announced on February 25, with her reporting directly to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles under an executive order signed by Trump on January 20. In this capacity, Gleason is responsible for advancing DOGE’s goal of streamlining government operations by reducing personnel, terminating contracts, and cutting budgets.
Gleason’s personal experience, particularly her daughter’s struggle with juvenile myositis, has fueled her advocacy for healthcare reform, with a focus on improving technology and data solutions. This passion for improving systems is likely to influence her approach to advancing government efficiency.
