The latest entry in the Pokémon franchise has been revealed. Pokemon Legends: Z-A, a successor to Pokemon Legends: Arceus, has unveiled exciting details about its setting and gameplay. The game takes place in the Kalos region, first introduced in Pokemon X and Y, with a focus on Lumiose City, which is undergoing a major urban redevelopment. Players will have the opportunity to explore the city and engage in real-time combat.

Gameplay and Setting in Lumiose City
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set in Lumiose City, the Paris-inspired location first featured in Pokemon X and Y in 2013. Several years after the events of those games, a redevelopment project has begun, designed to help Pokémon and humans coexist in the city. The Pokemon Company describes the updated city as one that combines modern urban spaces with natural elements, such as parks, waterfronts, and green areas. At the heart of the city is Prism Tower, an iconic symbol of Lumiose.

Players will visit Lumiose City during their journey and stay in a historic hotel called Hotel Z, which will eventually become their base of operations. Throughout the game, players will interact with new friends, including Urbaine or Taunie, depending on the player's chosen appearance. AZ, the owner of Hotel Z, will also make an appearance.

New Starters and Wild Zones
In a bit of a letdown for Cyndaquil fans, the confirmed starter Pokémon for Pokemon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig, meaning all of the Johto starters are included except for Cyndaquil. Players will choose one of these starters and then venture into wild zones within Lumiose City, where they can catch additional Pokémon. Zygarde, the legendary Pokémon, will play a significant role in the storyline.

Real-Time Combat and Mega Evolutions
The game introduces an exciting new combat system where players and their Pokémon can move around in real time during battles, marking a first for the Pokémon series. This adds a new layer of strategy, with positioning and timing becoming crucial to success. Players will need to consider area-of-effect moves and precise timing to gain an advantage in battle.

In addition to the real-time mechanics, Pokemon Legends: Z-A will feature Mega Evolutions. Certain Pokémon will have the ability to Mega Evolve, altering their appearance and sometimes their types. Some of the Mega Evolutions showcased in the trailer include Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Gyarados, Mega Absol, and Mega Altaria.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set to release in late 2025.
