After nearly two decades of thrilling riders, the world's tallest roller coaster, Kingda Ka, has been taken down.

On Friday, February 28, the iconic Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, was destroyed in a controlled explosion, marking the end of its reign as the tallest coaster globally.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office had issued a community alert the day before, warning about "a series of rapid explosions" in Jackson Township. "The noises may be startling, but please don’t be alarmed. Keep pets indoors if they are sensitive to loud sounds," the message advised. "If you or someone you know is affected by loud noises, take necessary precautions."

A dramatic aerial video from Fox29 Philadelphia captured the series of explosions at the coaster’s tallest peak, followed by the slow collapse of its steel structure into a massive cloud of smoke.

The demolition was part of a broader initiative announced last November by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, which is investing over $1 billion into its theme parks. Kingda Ka was one of several rides scheduled for removal to make room for new attractions expected to debut this year and through 2026. Other rides to be dismantled include Green Lantern, The Twister, Parachutes, and the Sky Walk, all for future developments.

Despite the farewell to Kingda Ka, thrill-seekers won’t be disappointed, as one of the new rides, The Flash: Vertical Velocity, promises to deliver plenty of adrenaline. This new coaster, dubbed "North America’s first super boomerang coaster," will be only the second of its kind in the world.

“We understand that saying goodbye to beloved rides can be difficult, and we appreciate our guests’ passion,” said park president Brian Bacica. “These changes are an important part of our growth and commitment to offering exceptional new experiences.”

Although no name has been revealed yet for the new coaster debuting in 2026, it is already being described as an “all-new, multi-record-breaking launch coaster.” Bacica added that it would be “a must-ride attraction sure to capture fans’ imaginations.”

The new rides will certainly have big shoes to fill, as Kingda Ka was known for its impressive 45-story ascent and mind-blowing 128 mph launch in just 50 seconds. Since its opening in 2005, it has reportedly hosted over 12 million rides.
