Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard Faces Voters in Primary Election
Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard, who has faced controversy during her tenure, is up against former ally-turned-challenger Jason House, a village trustee, in today's primary election. Henyard, campaigning for re-election, appeared at a voting site Tuesday morning and expressed confidence in her chances, even predicting a landslide victory. She arrived with a car stereo playing her campaign song, "We the People."
Voters Seek Change
Voters in the south suburban village of Dolton, which has around 20,000 residents, are voicing their desire for change, with many calling recent events under Henyard's leadership an embarrassment. House, whose campaign slogan is “clean house,” is aiming to address allegations of mismanagement and financial wrongdoing during Henyard’s time as mayor.
“We need more transparency,” House said, referring to the financial mismanagement issues under Henyard’s administration. He promised immediate action, stating that on day one, every record would be made accessible to the public, ensuring the residents receive the services they deserve.
Henyard’s Tumultuous Term
Henyard’s time in office has been marked by multiple controversies. She is under federal investigation for alleged misuse of village funds, including high-priced travel and first-class tickets for her and her associates. A subpoena issued in May 2024 sought Dolton’s financial records dating back to 2021. A report by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot revealed that the village’s finances were in a “dire” situation, with a surplus of $5.6 million in April 2022 turning into a $3.6 million deficit by May 2024. Additionally, six credit cards were reportedly used for expensive purchases, often without proper receipts.
Voters Call for Change
Residents who cast their votes on Tuesday expressed frustration with Henyard’s leadership. “The way the current mayor has been doing things just hasn’t been sitting right with me,” said Dolton voter Sharon Hunley. Another voter, Regan Lewis, bluntly stated, “We’re kinda like a joke, it’s embarrassing.”
Thomas Shelton, who supported Henyard in 2021, shared that he is now seeking a change. "Everyone needs a change, and right now, people are just looking for a change," he said.
While Henyard has been campaigning, she had not been seen in public recently. Meanwhile, House was expected to vote at a local elementary school on Tuesday morning.
The primary election will also include votes for village clerk and three trustee positions
