Suits LA' Episode 1 Recap: What That Major Twist Reveals About Ted
The new Suits spin-off, Suits LA, debuted on February 23, introducing viewers to a fresh law firm led by Ted Black, played by Arrow star Stephen Amell. Created by Suits mastermind Aaron Korsh, the premiere episode, titled "Seven Days a Week and Twice on Sundays," sets the stage for the show’s focus on entertainment law while also teasing drama that will unfold throughout the first season. Suits LA airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on NBC, with episodes streaming the following day on Peacock.
Episode 1 Kicks Off With a Botched Merger
The episode begins with Ted Black contemplating a merger with criminal lawyer Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt). The two have a solid working relationship, with Ted vouching for Stuart’s abilities. However, the next day, Ted discovers that Stuart has abandoned the merger, taking many of Ted's employees with him.
The episode then follows Ted scrambling to win back his team and clients. As he deals with the fallout, the main characters are introduced. Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis) and Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg) both assist Ted in regaining clients while also vying for a head of entertainment role at the firm. Erica is sharp and strategic, while Rick is charismatic and a trusted friend to Ted.
Stuart tries to lure Erica away by offering her the head of entertainment position, asking her for insider information. Erica shares this with a colleague, Leah Powers (Alice Lee), who informs Ted. Ted confronts Erica, only for her to reveal it was a loyalty test. She suggests Rick may have been offered the same deal, and when Ted talks to Rick, Rick admits he’s leaving to join Stuart.
Ted offers Erica a partner position in exchange for her continued support, and they make a pact to trust each other “seven days a week and twice on Sundays”—the source of the episode's title. Ted also meets with other key figures, including his ex, Samantha (Rachelle Goulding), who works for Stuart, and Amanda Stevens (Maggie Grace), a prominent pro bono lawyer at his firm.
Suits LA Adds a Celebrity Twist to the Legal Drama
The first episode also explains why Suits moved from New York to Los Angeles: to include exciting guest stars, like actor John Amos, who appears as himself in one of his final roles before his death in 2024. The LA setting also allows the show to parody real-life celebrities.
Throughout the episode, a few high-profile clients emerge, showcasing Ted's role in entertainment law. Actress Victoria Justice portrays a fictional action star who hires Ted’s firm, and Ted discusses representing actor Lester Thompson (Kevin Weisman), accused of killing his partner after the opening of his new film. Though Ted initially declines the case, he changes his mind by the end of the episode.
Ted’s backstory is further explored, revealing that he left New York after a criminal case went wrong, resulting in the death of a witness. He vowed to avoid criminal law thereafter, but with Stuart stealing his clients, Ted decides to represent Lester. This decision strains his relationship with Rick, and it promises to have lasting consequences throughout the season.
A Twist Unveils Ted’s Strained Relationship with His Father
The episode also introduces Eddie, a character who is seemingly close to Ted but whose relationship with Ted remains unclear. Eddie is present for Ted during tough moments throughout the episode.
Ted’s father also plays a significant role. In a flashback, Ted refuses his father’s offer to join his law firm, an offer Ted rejects due to his bitterness toward his dad. In the present day, Ted’s father is dying, and several characters suggest that Ted’s unresolved anger toward his father affects his work and personal life. They encourage Ted to visit his father for closure.
As the episode progresses, it’s revealed that Ted resents his father for not accepting Eddie, whom Ted considers his brother. Ted shares that his father didn’t attend Eddie’s funeral, revealing that Eddie has passed away. Ted leaves his father to die alone, deepening the emotional complexity of his character.
In a final twist, Eddie gives Ted a letter from Rick, which Ted had previously thrown away. Ted breaks down in tears as Eddie vanishes, revealing he was a ghost the entire time. The revelation leaves viewers eager to see more of Eddie’s emotional impact in future episodes. Eddie is portrayed by Carson A. Egan, and many hope to see more of his character in upcoming episodes.
The next episode, "Old Man Hanrahan," airs on March 2 at 9 p.m. on NBC, with the episode available to stream on Peacock the following day.
