"Bill Clinton Should've Resigned": Monica Lewinsky Reflects on Affair with Former US President
Monica Lewinsky, who was 22 years old when the affair with Bill Clinton began in 1995, has stated that the former US president should have resigned after Congress voted to impeach him for lying about their affair. In a recent interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lewinsky explained why Clinton should have stepped down rather than deflecting blame onto her after the scandal broke in 1998.
Lewinsky stated that the "right way" for Clinton to handle the situation would have been either to resign or to find a way to stay in office without lying and without throwing a young person "under the bus." She added, “I think the right way to handle a situation like that would have been to probably say it was nobody's business and to resign. Or to find a way of staying in office that was not lying and not throwing a young person who was just starting out in the world under the bus.”
While reflecting on the situation, Lewinsky acknowledged the complexity of the issue, especially given the power of the presidency. She said, “I’m hearing myself say that, and it’s like, OK we’re also talking about the most powerful office in the world. I don’t want to be naive either.”
Lewinsky’s comments were in response to podcast host Alex Cooper's question about the 1990s scandal and how the media and the White House should have handled the revelation. Lewinsky admitted that she "made mistakes" but emphasized that Clinton's actions were "more reprehensible" than hers. She clarified that while the relationship was consensual, it was Clinton’s responsibility to never have put her in that position as the most powerful man in the country.
She also reflected on the public fallout from the affair, calling Clinton’s denial and subsequent gaslighting “on a grand scale.” She recalled the impact the scandal had on women of her generation, saying, “There was so much collateral damage for women of my generation to watch a young woman be pilloried on a world stage – torn apart for my sexuality, for my mistakes, for my everything.”
Lewinsky shared how the scandal cost her the future she envisioned but noted that, despite it all, she managed to retain a sense of herself. “I was lucky enough to hold onto a strand of my true self, but I lost my future,” she said. However, she added that she’s grateful for how her life has changed over the last decade, acknowledging that this outcome was not guaranteed.
