John Lithgow Confirms His Casting as Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter Series: "This Will Define the Final Chapter of My Life" [Exclusive]
John Lithgow has officially confirmed that he will be playing Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. After the success of the eight Warner Bros. films, J.K. Rowling's beloved book series is making its way to television. Francesca Gardiner will be the showrunner, but casting details have remained under wraps until now.
Lithgow, who will be 79 by the time filming wraps, confirmed his role in an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley while promoting his new project, The Rule of Jenny Penn. The actor revealed that accepting the role was not an easy decision due to the extensive commitment it entails at this stage in his career. However, he is excited about the opportunity.
"It came as a total surprise to me," Lithgow explained. "I got the call while I was at the Sundance Film Festival, and it wasn’t an easy choice because it’s going to define the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are bringing Harry Potter back. That’s why it’s been such a tough decision. I’ll be 87 at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes."
What Lithgow’s Casting Means for the Harry Potter Series
Lithgow’s confirmation makes him the first official cast member for the Harry Potter series, signaling that development on the show is progressing. While HBO has been quiet about casting until now, Lithgow’s announcement suggests more casting news may soon follow. The series is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027, with filming set to begin in the summer of 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K.
Lithgow’s confirmation marks a significant moment for the series, as it will be the first time an American actor has played Dumbledore, a role previously portrayed by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the films.
Challenges and Expectations for Lithgow as Dumbledore
Lithgow has big shoes to fill, with Dumbledore being a central figure not only in the Harry Potter series but also in the Fantastic Beasts films. Known for his impressive performances in projects such as Cliffhanger (1993), The Old Man (2022–2024), Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), and Interstellar (2014), Lithgow seems more than capable of stepping into the role.
However, the challenge will be to live up to the high expectations set by the eight films in the original saga. Bold creative choices may be essential for the new series to carve its own path forward.
While the casting of Lithgow may raise eyebrows—especially since he's American—his performance is sure to spark strong opinions among fans. As the show progresses, many more casting decisions will follow, with much anticipation surrounding the key roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
