Democrats Warn of "Largest Medicaid Cut in American History" in GOP Budget Plan

House Democrats are intensifying their criticism of the GOP's proposed budget, warning that it would result in the most significant Medicaid cuts in the program's history.

Led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Democrats are pledging unanimous opposition to the budget resolution, which is expected to be brought to the floor as soon as Tuesday evening.

While Medicaid is not the only aspect of the GOP budget prompting Democratic backlash, it is the central focus of their current attacks. As the resolution nears a vote, Democrats are highlighting the risk of deep Medicaid cuts, which they argue would help offset the cost of extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

“The Republican budget represents the largest Medicaid cut in American history,” Jeffries declared Tuesday on the steps of the Capitol. “Children, families, people with disabilities, seniors, hospitals, and nursing homes will all suffer.”

He continued, “Let me be clear: House Democrats will not provide a single vote for this reckless Republican budget. Not one.”

The GOP budget resolution charges the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid, with finding at least $880 billion in cuts to programs under its jurisdiction. These cuts are intended to win support from conservative budget advocates, who are focused on reducing deficit spending. This goal is complicated by the proposed extension of President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which are projected to reduce federal revenues by trillions of dollars.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has defended the budget proposal, stating that the savings would primarily come from eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse within Medicaid, as well as expanding work requirements for certain adults receiving benefits.
