Joy Reid’s MSNBC Show Canceled in Major Shake-Up

Joy Reid’s 7 p.m. program on MSNBC, The ReidOut, will be canceled as part of a major programming overhaul led by Rebecca Kutler, the network's new president. According to sources familiar with the changes, the final episode is scheduled for sometime this week. The ReidOut, known for its in-depth interviews with politicians and newsmakers, has been a key part of MSNBC’s lineup for the last five years.

The show will be replaced by a new panel program featuring Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez. The trio, who currently co-host The Weekend on Saturday and Sunday mornings, will lead the new show.

An MSNBC spokesperson declined to comment, as did Reid.

This programming shake-up marks Kutler’s first major move since taking over as president earlier this month. She has been working on a new programming strategy aimed at boosting the network’s ratings, which, although better than CNN’s, still trail Fox News.

Other significant changes are anticipated at MSNBC. Earlier this year, Rachel Maddow returned to her 9 p.m. slot five nights a week, after cutting back to Mondays. Alex Wagner, who had temporarily taken over the 9 p.m. slot, is expected to return to the network in late April, though a permanent replacement for her is in the works. Jen Psaki, former White House press secretary, is a potential candidate for the role, though this decision is still pending. Wagner is expected to remain with MSNBC as a correspondent.

Reid, a prominent MSNBC anchor, was named the host of The ReidOut in 2020, following her role as the host of AM Joy, a weekend talk show. Her promotion to prime time was one of the first key programming decisions made by Cesar Conde, then-chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, which included MSNBC, NBC News, CNBC, and Telemundo.

MSNBC is undergoing a significant corporate transformation as it separates from NBCUniversal due to a Comcast spinoff. The network will join Comcast’s other cable channels, such as CNBC and USA Network, in a new company led by veteran NBCUniversal executive Mark Lazarus. Kutler, while having briefed Lazarus on the changes, is leading the programming shift.

Additionally, MSNBC is looking to expand its roster of anchors, considering roles for Eugene Daniels of Politico and Melissa Murray, a professor at NYU School of Law, to complement their current work.
