Since the release of the first look for Shabana Azmi’s Dabba Cartel, comparisons with Dimple Kapadia’s 2023 web show Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo have been widespread. However, Azmi has dismissed these similarities, emphasizing that her show is more “realistic.”
In an interview with India Today Digital, the veteran actress admitted that she initially shared the concern of being compared to the show. "Before watching it, I was worried we might be directly compared. But Shibani (Shibani Akhtar, creator of Dabba Cartel) was confident and reassured me that it wouldn’t happen. Seeing her conviction, I felt at ease. When I watched the show, I found it well-made, but it’s quite different from ours," Azmi explained.
She went on to detail the differences between the two shows after watching Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo. "Their setup is completely different, very exotic. The costumes are unique, and they have a specific dialect. Our show, on the other hand, is very grounded, focusing on middle-class women. So, I don't think there’s any comparison," Azmi concluded.
Unlike Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo, which presents a stylized, almost surreal depiction of a matriarch-led drug cartel, Dabba Cartel is firmly grounded in the reality of middle-class women facing unexpected situations.
The series, produced by Excel Entertainment, features an impressive cast, including Jyotika, Anjali Anand, Gajraj Rao, Shalini Pandey, Sai Tamhankar, and Nimisha Sajayan.
While both shows explore women stepping into unconventional roles, Dabba Cartel offers a more realistic take on female-driven crime dramas.
Released on February 28, Dabba Cartel has garnered mixed reviews from both audiences and critics.
