 SAG Awards 2025: Colin Farrell Takes Home Honor for The Batman as Demi Moore, Timothée Chalamet, and Conclave Shine

Colin Farrell won the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his role in The Penguin during a lively ceremony in Los Angeles. In a repeat of his Golden Globe win, Farrell delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech.

Presenting the award, Jamie Lee Curtis humorously quipped, “The Actor goes to the man who gave me Covid at the Golden Globes,” prompting Farrell to respond, “Guilty as charged, but Brendan Gleeson f**king gave it to me, so I was just spreading the love.” As he accepted the award, Farrell reflected on the nature of acting, calling it “playtime” and a way to “keep the dream of a child alive” while navigating what it means to be human. He ended with a deeply emotional tribute to his sons, James and Henry, saying, “My son James and my son Henry have made my life so much more special and joyful than I ever truly thought possible.”

The SAG Awards, held annually by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), is the final major event before the Academy Awards. Although Oscar voting has already closed, the SAG Awards provide valuable insight into frontrunners, and this year, there were several surprises.

Conclave, Edward Berger's thriller about the selection of a new pope, triumphed over Anora, Sean Baker’s Oscar frontrunner, to win Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. With Conclave winning big at BAFTA, it now looks like it could pose a serious challenge to Anora during the final stretch of awards season.

In the best actress category, a tight race saw Demi Moore, who has been gaining attention for her role in The Substance, edge out Mikey Madison from Anora. After previous losses to Madison at BAFTA and the Independent Spirit Awards, Moore may now be slightly ahead of her rival. “What we believe is so much more powerful than what we think,” Moore said upon winning. “When I believe it, I will see it. I am so grateful for this.”

In a surprising turn in the best actor category, Timothée Chalamet, playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, defeated favorite Adrien Brody, who has been dominant in the race for The Brutalist. “This was five and a half years of my life,” Chalamet admitted, emphasizing the dedication behind his role.

Zoë Saldaña, despite controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez, claimed the prize for Best Supporting Female Actor in a Film, proudly expressing, “I am proud to be part of a union that allows me to be who I am.” Kieran Culkin, meanwhile, continued his streak by winning Best Supporting Male Actor for A Real Pain.

On the television front, Anna Sawai of Shogun triumphed over Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. Her co-star Hiroyuki Sanada took home the equivalent award for male actor, and Shogun won Best Ensemble in a Drama Series, defeating Bridgerton.

The 2025 SAG ceremony, hosted by Kristen Bell, was a relaxed and enjoyable affair, managing to honor the craft of acting while acknowledging the challenges faced by Los Angeles in the wake of this year’s devastating wildfires. Jane Fonda was a standout, delivering a powerful speech at 87 years old. She urged the audience to stand together, saying, “We must not isolate. We must stay in community. We must help the vulnerable. We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future, one that is beckoning, welcoming.”

Farrell beat fellow Irish actor Andrew Scott, who was also nominated for his role in Ripley. However, Scott had already claimed victory at the Berlin Film Festival, winning Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Richard Rodgers in Blue Moon.

Irish cinema also had a successful weekend, with Christy, a gritty drama set in Cork by director Brendan Canty, winning the Grand Prix for Best Film in the Generation 14plus section at Berlin. The jury praised the film for its vibrant and fresh depiction of a community struggling through tough times. This win follows in the footsteps of An Cailín Ciúin, which previously won in the same section and went on to receive an Oscar nomination.
