"He Lives On and With Us": 1923 Star Opens Up About Recasting Late Co-Star's Character for Season 2

"He Lives On and With Us": 1923 Star Opens Up About Recasting Late Co-Star's Character for Season 2

After his appearance in the first season of 1923, the Yellowstone prequel series, actor Cole Brings Plenty tragically passed away. Found deceased in April 2024 at the age of 27, his role was recast for Season 2, though the late actor was honored at the beginning of the new season.

Brings Plenty, the nephew of Yellowstone actor Mo Brings Plenty, portrayed Pete Plenty Clouds in Season 1 of 1923. Initially, it was reported that Brings Plenty had gone missing, and his family appealed on social media for assistance in finding him. Unfortunately, law enforcement soon confirmed his death, though the cause was not disclosed.

In a statement released by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office in Kansas on April 5, 2024, it was revealed: "At approximately 11:45 a.m., deputies were dispatched to an area near 200th and Homestead Lane regarding an unoccupied vehicle. Upon checking the area, they discovered a deceased male in a wooded area, identified as Cole Brings Plenty, 27. Investigations, Crime Scene Investigators, and the Medical Examiner are on the scene."

Season 2 of 1923 Pays Tribute to Cole Brings Plenty

The premiere of 1923 Season 2 aired on Paramount+ on February 23. The opening episode begins with an "In Memoriam" photo of Brings Plenty, followed by the appearance of his character, Pete Plenty Clouds, played by new actor Jeremy Gauna (American Primeval).

Teonna Rainwater, who plays Aminah Nieves, recently spoke with TV Insider about the recasting and honoring Brings Plenty. While acknowledging the emotional difficulty of returning to work without her friend, Rainwater explained that continuing with his character’s story was the "best" way to honor the late actor.

"[Recasting is] the best thing we could’ve done," she shared. "I could have easily gone into this with a lot of resentment, hate, and pain. And it’s not to say I didn’t at first, but there comes a moment when you have to think about the person that Coco [Cole] was. He’s my brother. We talked every day about this. He lives on and with us every day. He was so excited and so happy to be a part of something like this. I could have been sad, or I could have honored him in the best way and uplifted Jeremy Gauna, who stepped in with such grace to carry that weight."

Rainwater continued, "I think everyone felt like, in those moments when Pete was there, Coco was also with us, resting his hands on us, saying, 'It’s OK. You guys got this.' He really allowed us to experience moments of joy, even when it felt overwhelming. It was a lot, but I love my brother, and I believe we all did the best we could. Jeremy did an amazing job, and I know the fans will love it."
