Jane Fonda Receives 2025 SAG Life Achievement Award

Jane Fonda Receives 2025 SAG Life Achievement Award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Jane Fonda, the two-time Oscar-winning actress and activist whose career spans six decades across film and television, was honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award at the 31st Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday, which was streamed live on Netflix.

"Your enthusiasm makes this seem less like the twilight of my life and more like a ‘Go girl, kick ass’ moment. Because I’m not done," Fonda shared with the audience.

Reflecting on her career, she continued, "For a woman like me, who grew up in the 40s and 50s, when women weren’t supposed to have opinions or get angry, acting gave me the chance to play angry women with opinions, which, as you know, is a bit of a stretch for me."

Fonda also expressed appreciation for SAG, praising the union for fostering empathy and giving actors the opportunity to connect with humanity and "touch souls."

Addressing the political climate in the United States, Fonda remarked on the Trump administration, urging, "We must help the vulnerable. We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future," and reflecting on films she has been a part of that challenged political norms.

At 87 years old, Fonda is widely recognized for her roles in iconic films such as Klute (1971), 9 to 5 (1980), and Monster-in-Law (2004). More recently, she starred alongside Lily Tomlin in Netflix's Grace and Frankie, where the two play older women embracing new chapters in life after divorce.

The New York native is also a seven-time Golden Globe winner and earned a Tony Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 2009 Broadway production of 33 Variations.

Fonda's activism is equally well-known. She gained the nickname “Hanoi Jane” for her vocal opposition to the Vietnam War in the 1970s, later protested the Iraq War in 2003, and has continued her activism with “Fire Drill Fridays,” which raise awareness about climate change.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, presenting the award, described Fonda as "ferocious" both in her advocacy and her art, highlighting how inseparable the two are.

The daughter of late actor Henry Fonda and sister of the late Peter Fonda, Jane Fonda has become a beloved figure in Hollywood. In addition to her acting, she is also a producer, author, and fitness icon, coming close to achieving EGOT status, having only been short of an Emmy. In 1983, she was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Recording category for her book Workout Book for Pregnancy, Birth, and Recovery, though she did not win.
