Gene Hackman's Pacemaker Activity Suggests He Died Days Before Discovery

Actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead on Wednesday in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, with officials stating that Hackman likely passed away several days earlier.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza shared on Friday that Hackman's pacemaker was last active on February 17, suggesting it was "a very good assumption" that Hackman died that day, based on input from a pathologist. The pacemaker, a battery-powered device used to regulate heart rhythm, provided this crucial clue.

The deaths of Hackman and Arakawa raised immediate questions. Authorities found no signs of forced entry, foul play, robbery, or gas leaks, including carbon monoxide, at the scene.

Mendoza revealed on Friday that both bodies tested negative for carbon monoxide exposure, dispelling one possible cause of death.

Hackman, who was known for his tough-guy roles in films like The French Connection and Unforgiven, and Arakawa, a classical pianist and businesswoman, were found in separate rooms of their home by a maintenance worker on Wednesday afternoon. The worker noticed that the front door was unlocked when he arrived, but Mendoza later clarified it had been closed.

Hackman’s body was discovered in a mudroom area, while Arakawa’s was found in a bathroom near the front of the house. An open prescription bottle and scattered pills were found near Arakawa’s body. A German Shepherd was also found dead in a bathroom closet, and two other dogs were found alive on the property.

The last contact the couple had with the maintenance workers was about two weeks prior. The workers indicated they rarely saw the couple, communicating mainly through phone or text.

Hackman and Arakawa, who met in the mid-1980s, had been married and living in Santa Fe. Hackman, a beloved actor, had one son and two daughters with his first wife, Faye Maltese.

In a statement, Hackman’s daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, along with his granddaughter Annie, expressed their grief: "He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss."
