German Election: Merz's CDU Triumphs, AfD Takes Second Place

Germany's electoral authority has declared the CDU/CSU conservative bloc the winner in preliminary results. Conservative leader Friedrich Merz has urged Europe to reconsider its alignment with the US.

Preliminary results from Germany's electoral authority show that the CDU/CSU secured 28.6% of the vote, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) following closely behind at 20.8%. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD, which took third place, garnered 16.4%.

The AfD, currently ostracized by other parties, is not expected to be included in the new government. Merz, who could become Germany’s next chancellor, has signaled potential coalition talks with the SPD and/or the Green Party.

The snap election was triggered after the collapse of the three-party coalition led by Scholz's SPD. The CDU/CSU has emerged as the dominant force, while other parties like the Free Democrats (FDP) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) failed to secure enough votes to enter the Bundestag.
