Legendary MSG Broadcaster Al Trautwig Passes Away at 68, Tributes Flood In
Al Trautwig, a legendary figure in sports broadcasting and a beloved presence on MSG Network, has passed away at 68. Known for his distinctive voice, Trautwig was best recognized for hosting the pregame shows for the New York Knicks and Rangers. His death was announced by his former colleague, Allan Hahn, who paid tribute to Trautwig's remarkable career and iconic voice.
"Al Trautwig had an amazing voice and used it with the skill of a tenor bringing depth and emotion to a song," Hahn wrote. "He had an incredible passion for sports and was versatile across baseball, basketball, and hockey, not to mention his outstanding work at the Olympics."
While the cause of death has not been confirmed, Trautwig had shared with Newsday in 2023 that he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. At that time, he mentioned that he had been cleared and was focused on recovery.
Who Was Al Trautwig?
A Long Island native, Trautwig became a cherished figure in sports media, most recently hosting MSG Network’s pregame shows for the Knicks and Rangers, and occasionally stepping in as a fill-in play-by-play announcer. Although he took a leave of absence in 2019, he remained involved in the industry and even taught sports media courses at Adelphi University.
Beyond his work with MSG Network, Trautwig’s career spanned major sports events and networks, including ABC, NBC, and USA Network. He covered the Olympics, the Tour de France, and the US Open tennis tournament. His voice became synonymous with gymnastics coverage during the Summer Olympics, where he was a standout broadcaster.
Tributes from fans and colleagues have flooded social media, with many recalling his ability to bring excitement and depth to his commentary. One fan expressed, "My heart is gutted. I grew up with him on MSG. He was the blueprint for this whole media business. I wish I could have met him." Another fondly remembered a moment from the 1985 NHL All-Star Game when Trautwig humorously dressed as a cowboy, showcasing his fun and engaging personality.
The sports community is mourning the loss of an extraordinary broadcaster whose passion for the game and captivating storytelling left a lasting legacy. Condolences and heartfelt tributes continue to pour in for Trautwig’s family and friends, as fans honor the legendary voice that brought countless iconic sports moments to life.
