Jordan Schultz and Ian Rapoport Have Verbal Altercation at Indianapolis Starbucks

Jordan Schultz and Ian Rapoport Have Verbal Altercation at Indianapolis Starbucks

The NFL Scouting Combine brings the entire football community together—sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.

According to multiple sources who witnessed the incident, Fox's Jordan Schultz and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport were involved in a heated verbal exchange Wednesday afternoon at the Starbucks in the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. Schultz reportedly confronted Rapoport.

The altercation gained widespread attention after PFT Commenter (Eric Sollenberger) tweeted about a “serious big time media confrontation” between two NFL newsbreakers. The tweet ignited much speculation as people tried to piece together what had happened.

The location of the incident, a Starbucks, is notably ironic as Schultz is the son of former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz.

Sources say Rapoport was conversing with an agent when Schultz approached him and said, "We need to talk," or words to that effect.

Rapoport responded, “We don’t need to talk,” or something along those lines.

Schultz then allegedly made accusations toward Rapoport, which Rapoport considered unfounded. The two were reportedly standing face-to-face.

“If you have anything to say to me, say it to my fucking face,” Schultz allegedly said. “If this continues, we’re going to have a fucking problem.” (Schultz later claimed he didn’t remember using profanity.)

Rapoport reportedly asked Schultz to step back, to which Schultz responded, “If this happens again, we’re gonna have a fucking problem. Now I’ll step back.”

The incident was reported to NFL Security, and statements were taken from several witnesses.

Rapoport declined to comment on the matter. Schultz texted PFT, saying, “It really isn’t anything too much. Ian Rapoport and I had a verbal confrontation. It lasted a little over a minute. Multiple agents and reporters were nearby. Rapoport was the one who called security shortly after, but it never escalated further.”

Schultz initially disputed the account of profanity but later admitted he recalls using none.

Rapoport told a witness that NFL Security was alerted because the exchange was seen as a potential physical threat.

The NFL has not responded to requests for comment.

The trigger for the confrontation appears to have been Schultz’s Wednesday report about Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford meeting with Raiders minority owner Tom Brady in Montana. Rapoport downplayed the meeting as an unplanned, random encounter, while Schultz rejected that explanation, insisting it wasn’t just a chance meeting.

It seems there may have been lingering tensions between the two reporters, which finally boiled over.

We’ll have to see what happens next, but it has certainly provided an unexpected burst of drama during an otherwise quiet week in Indianapolis.
