X Experiences Multiple Outages: Musk Attributes It to a ‘Massive Cyberattack’
X (formerly Twitter) faced multiple outages today, with the longest lasting several hours, starting around 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. The platform went down three separate times, with users reporting issues accessing the site, particularly during the second and third outages. Over 40,000 reports were submitted to Downdetector during the second outage, and 35,000 during the third, indicating widespread access issues.
The platform appeared to resolve the outage by 10 a.m. PT, as the volume of reports on Downdetector started to decline.
Musk Claims Cyberattack Behind the Outage
Elon Musk, the owner of X, took to Twitter to attribute the disruption to a "massive cyberattack," though no official details have been provided. In an interview with Fox Business, Musk claimed that the attack came from IP addresses in the Ukraine region, though he didn’t provide further specifics. His comments come amid ongoing tensions with Ukraine, though it’s important to note that IP addresses can be masked, making it difficult to definitively trace the origin.
At the time of the interview, Musk confirmed that X was functioning again, though some users continued to report issues, with nearly 2,000 reports still appearing on Downdetector. By the time of the last update, the number of reports had fallen below 1,000.
Limited Official Response
Beyond Musk's tweet and interview, there has been little official communication from X or other company representatives. Musk has continued to tweet memes and updates on his other projects, like DOGE, but the platform’s official response has been minimal. Even Linda Yaccarino, the acting CEO of Twitter, has remained largely silent, only engaging with Musk’s tweets about DOGE.
What Are the Alternatives to X?
As users encountered issues with X, many turned to alternatives like Bluesky and Threads, with Bluesky seeing a significant rise in popularity since Musk acquired Twitter in 2022. Other platforms like Cohost, Countersocial, and Mastodon are also options for those seeking a new social space, though each comes with its own unique features and learning curve.
Back to Normal for X
By 10 a.m. PT, X seemed to be returning to normal, with access issues resolving for most users. While some on Reddit reported difficulty logging in, the platform's performance appears to be stabilizing, with no major outages being reported after the initial decline in issues.
