Greenland Election Result 2025: Early Vote Counts Indicate Gains for Independence-Backing Party

Greenland is holding a pivotal election, with early results showing a significant surge for the Narelaq party, which advocates for independence from Denmark. The election comes amid growing interest from former U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring Greenland.

As of the early vote counts on March 12, 2025, Narelaq is projected to secure around 36% of the vote, a sharp increase from the 12% they received four years ago. This is based on about 1,000 ballots counted, which represent roughly 2.5% of the total eligible votes. Larger towns, including the capital Nuuk, have yet to report, so the final results may differ significantly.

Greenland's electorate is around 40,000, out of a total population of approximately 57,000, making the stakes high for the territory's future.

Declining Support for the Ruling Party

Prime Minister Mute B. Egede's left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party, along with its coalition partner, Siumut, secured around 35% of the vote in early returns, down from nearly 66% in the previous election. The higher-than-usual voter turnout was noted, with political parties in Nuuk hosting rallies to engage voters, offering cakes and hampers.

Both Egede's party and Siumut have supported increasing Greenland's independence from Denmark, which still controls the territory's foreign policy and security. Earlier this year, Egede urged Greenland to free itself from the "shackles of the colonial era," while Siumut expressed a desire to start talks with Denmark regarding full independence in the next election term.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been an outspoken advocate for acquiring Greenland, even claiming that the U.S. would take control of the island "one way or the other." His comments have stirred debate, with some speculating on the extent to which the U.S. would go to secure Greenland’s territory.

Trump’s remarks have inadvertently fueled discussions about Greenland’s independence. His provocative stance has prompted candidates to present their visions for sovereignty and outline potential steps toward achieving full independence from Denmark.
