Nepal's Former King Gyanendra Shah Arrives in Kathmandu to Hero's Welcome Amidst Calls for Monarchy’s Restoration
Former King Gyanendra Shah of Nepal arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday, March 9, 2025, amid tight security, as pro-monarchy activists gathered at the airport to welcome him. His arrival has sparked renewed calls for the restoration of the monarchy, which was abolished in 2008.
Upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport from Pokhara aboard a Simrik Air helicopter, Gyanendra was greeted by hundreds of loyalists, including leaders and supporters from the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party, who chanted slogans in his favor. The crowd displayed placards with messages such as "We want our King back," "Abolish the federal republican system and reinstate the monarchy," and "The King and the country are dearer than our life."
At 77, Gyanendra had been visiting religious sites across Nepal before his return to Kathmandu. Outside the airport, hundreds of supporters on motorbikes, holding pictures of the former king and national flags, greeted him.
Riot police were stationed outside the Narayanhity Palace Museum, the former royal palace, amid rumors that Gyanendra would enter the palace with his supporters. However, no incidents occurred as the crowd followed Gyanendra to his private residence, Nirmal Niwas, on the outskirts of Kathmandu. Security forces were deployed along the route from the airport to Nirmal Niwas to ensure public safety.
For several days leading up to his return, pro-monarchy rallies had taken place in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other areas, calling for the monarchy’s reinstatement. The movement gained further momentum after Gyanendra’s comments on Democracy Day in February, when he stated, "The time has come for us to assume responsibility to protect the country and bring about national unity."
Popular Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, granddaughter of Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister B.P. Koirala, also used her social media to encourage the public to gather at the Kathmandu airport to welcome the former monarch
