Former Bucks Player and Billionaire Businessman Junior Bridgeman Passes Away at 71

Junior Bridgeman, a former NBA player turned billionaire businessman, has passed away at the age of 71. He died after suffering a medical emergency during the 45th Annual Leadership Luncheon on Scouting. Bridgeman, who had been speaking with WLKY’s Kent Taylor as part of the event, revealed he was having a heart attack just before the incident occurred. While being interviewed at the Galt House Hotel, he clutched his chest before collapsing. Emergency services were called, and he was taken to the hospital, where it was later confirmed he had passed away. The Al J. Schneider Company, owner of the Galt House, confirmed his death.

Bridgeman was one of the wealthiest former athletes in the world, with a net worth of over $600 million. His remarkable career spanned both sports and business, making him a legend in both fields.

A Legendary Career in Basketball and Beyond

Drafted eighth overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, Bridgeman was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks a few years later, where he spent most of his career. Before entering the NBA, he played three years at Louisville, averaging 15.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Bridgeman is best known as a Milwaukee Bucks legend, having played nine seasons with the team. He also spent two years with the Clippers before returning to the Bucks for one final season, retiring after the 1986-87 season.

Widely respected as one of the league's best reserves, Bridgeman averaged 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists during his NBA career. He later became a successful businessman, acquiring Ebony and Jet magazines, and his business ventures contributed to his substantial wealth. In 2016, Forbes ranked him as the fourth-richest retired athlete, behind only Michael Jordan, David Beckham, and Arnold Palmer.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his condolences and praised Bridgeman’s legacy. "Junior served as a mentor to generations of NBA players and athletes across sports, sharing his wisdom on how to succeed in business. He dedicated 50 years to the NBA — most recently as a minority owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, an investor in NBA Africa, and a player who represented the league with class and dignity."
