Revisiting the Kenny Pickett Trade to Philadelphia One Year Later

The Philadelphia Eagles have consistently placed high value on the quarterback position, making significant moves to secure top talent.

In recent years, the Eagles made bold moves to improve their quarterback situation. In 2015, they acquired Sam Bradford and a fifth-round pick from the St. Louis Rams in exchange for Nick Foles, a fourth-round pick, and another fifth-round pick. After one season with Bradford as the starter, the Eagles selected Carson Wentz with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Wentz was instrumental in leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl in 2017, despite an ACL injury late in the regular season. The team rewarded Wentz with a four-year, $128 million extension in 2019.

Even with Wentz under contract through the 2024 season, the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wentz was benched after a disappointing 2020 season, and Hurts became the starter. After the 2020 season, the Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a third-round pick and a conditional second-round pick.

In a move that was anticipated due to Hurts' established role as the team’s future, the Eagles traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Cleveland Browns nearly one year after acquiring him. The Eagles received a 2025 fifth-round pick and 2023 fifth-round quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson in exchange for Pickett. According to Over the Cap, this trade saved the Eagles $2.6 million in cap space.

This trade is another example of the Eagles’ strategy of acquiring quarterbacks to develop and potentially flip for future assets. With Hurts firmly entrenched as the starter, this move seemed inevitable.

Pickett, a product of Pittsburgh, was selected by the Steelers with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started 24 games over his first two seasons, with a record of 14-10.

In 2024, after the Denver Broncos released veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, the Steelers quickly signed him. On the same day the Steelers acquired Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears, they traded Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Eagles for a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks.

Pickett spent the 2024 season as a backup to Hurts, who led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. Pickett made appearances in five regular-season games. His first significant playing time came in Week 16 after Hurts suffered a concussion. Pickett completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders.

In Week 17, Pickett started in place of Hurts, completing 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown before leaving the game with an injury. He was replaced by Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick. McKee started in Week 18 against the New York Giants, while Hurts returned for the playoffs.

Pickett also played a few snaps in the postseason when the Eagles had significant leads, including seven snaps in the Super Bowl.

What the Eagles Gained and Lost in the Pickett Trade
The Eagles originally traded a 2024 third-round pick (98th overall) and two 2025 seventh-round picks to the Steelers for Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick (120th overall). The Eagles later traded the 120th pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick.

In addition to Pickett, the Eagles made an intra-division trade with the Washington Commanders before the 2024 season, acquiring wide receiver Jahan Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The Eagles gave up the third-round pick from the Dolphins and two seventh-round picks for Dotson. Although Dotson struggled to make a significant impact during the regular season, he came through in the playoffs, catching a touchdown in the Wild Card win and contributing to the Super Bowl victory.

On Monday, the Eagles traded Pickett to the Browns for Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Thompson-Robinson, drafted in 2023, has struggled in his early NFL career, with a 1-4 record, 880 passing yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions. However, he’s a mobile quarterback who showed promise at UCLA and will likely be a developmental project for the Eagles behind Hurts and McKee.

Through the Pickett trade, the Eagles acquired Dotson, Thompson-Robinson, two 2025 fifth-round picks, and saved $2.6 million in cap space. In exchange, they gave up Pickett, a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and four seventh-round picks. While it’s too early to fully evaluate the trade, it appears that the Eagles may have ultimately moved on from the Pickett experiment.
