Daylight Saving Time 2025: When to Adjust Your Clocks and Why It Still Matters

Daylight Saving Time (DST) was first introduced in the United States through the Standard Time Act of 1918, which established federal control over time zones.

As Daylight Saving Time approaches, most Americans will lose an hour of sleep this weekend. On Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m. local time, clocks will be set forward one hour for the annual “spring forward” time change. While this results in a lost hour of rest, it also brings longer daylight hours in the evening, providing brighter commutes home for many.

The DST period will last until Sunday, November 2, when clocks will shift back to standard time for the winter months. While most states observe this change, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not participate in DST. Arizona, due to its desert climate, opts out, except for the Navajo Nation, which follows the shift.

DST was first implemented in the U.S. through the Standard Time Act of 1918, with the aim of overseeing time zones federally. Since 1966, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has been in charge of DST, promoting benefits such as energy savings and reduced crime rates as reasons for its continuation.

However, recent efforts to make DST permanent have not progressed. Several bills proposing year-round DST have been introduced in Congress, but none have gained significant traction. Former President Donald Trump also expressed support for ending the biannual clock changes, stating in December 2024 that the Republican Party would work to abolish DST.

As Americans adjust their clocks this weekend, the debate over whether to continue or abolish DST remains unresolved. For now, the familiar routine of "springing forward" in March and "falling back" in November continues.
