Republican Lawmaker Refers to Transgender Member as a Man, Ends House Hearing Early After Challenge

A Republican congressman abruptly ended a House hearing on Tuesday after being challenged for misgendering Representative Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress.

The incident occurred during a hearing on arms control and U.S. assistance to Europe, where the chair of the Europe Subcommittee, Representative Keith Self of Texas, introduced Representative McBride by calling her "Mr. McBride."

McBride, who has often chosen not to engage in similar situations, briefly expressed her displeasure by responding with “Thank you, Madam Chair” before continuing with her remarks. However, Representative William Keating of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, was not willing to let the matter slide. He interrupted Self, asking him to repeat the introduction. Self again referred to McBride as "Mr. McBride."

Keating, visibly upset, responded, "Mr. Chairman, you are out of order. Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I’ve come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent.”

Self insisted that the hearing should proceed, but Keating refused to continue unless McBride was properly introduced. "You will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way," he stated. With that, Self adjourned the session.

On social media afterward, Self explained his actions, writing that "It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female," referencing an executive order signed by President Trump in his second term to limit federal recognition to just two genders.

During his exchange with Keating, Self also mentioned a "standard" set on the House floor. Keating pressed for clarification, asking what that standard was, but Self did not elaborate. Republicans in the House have previously avoided directly referring to McBride as a woman in official proceedings. In February, when McBride gave her first floor speech, Republican Representative Mary Miller of Illinois referred to her as the “gentleman from Delaware.” McBride chose not to respond.

On other occasions, Republicans have opted to address her as "the member from Delaware," bypassing gendered terms altogether. McBride has typically continued her remarks without making a comment on her gender.

Throughout her time in Congress, McBride has focused on economic issues and rarely draws attention to her identity, often giving her GOP colleagues the benefit of the doubt in her interactions with them. She did not publicly comment on being misgendered during Tuesday's hearing.
