The search for missing 2-year-old Dane Paulsen ended with the discovery of his body in Oregon’s Siletz River on Tuesday. Paulsen had been missing since March 1.
The search for 2-year-old Dane Paulsen concluded tragically when authorities found his body in the Siletz River on Tuesday, according to deputies. Dane had been missing since March 1 after last being seen playing in the front yard of his home near the river, located about 100 feet from the water in rural Oregon. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that his body was located roughly three miles downstream from his home on March 11.
The toddler’s remains were discovered by Juan Heredia from the Angels Recovery Dive Team, who had joined a volunteer search organized by the family. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
Timeline of Dane Paulsen's Disappearance
March 1: Paulsen was last seen playing outside his home in northern Siletz, Oregon, at about 4:25 PM local time. He was wearing a grey fuzzy hoodie with ears, black pants, and blue-and-white sneakers. Authorities later updated his description, noting he has brown hair and green eyes.
March 2: A large-scale search effort, including the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, FBI, and nearly 150 community volunteers, covered 382 acres and 283 miles using watercraft, drones, divers, and K9s by 9:00 PM.
March 3: The search expanded to include aerial drones equipped with thermal imaging. At this point, officials revealed that Dane was comfortable around both strangers and water, though he couldn’t swim.
March 4: Focus shifted to water-based search operations, including boats, sonar, and underwater drones. Authorities pointed to evidence suggesting Dane had been near the river’s edge before he went missing.
March 5–10: The search continued for several days without success. Officials expanded the river search to over 14 miles. A white van seen in the area two weeks before Paulsen’s disappearance was also investigated, though no evidence linked it to the case.
March 11: Officials found Dane Paulsen’s body in the Siletz River.
