Mac Jones Signs Two-Year Deal with 49ers to Strengthen Quarterback Depth: Can He Make an Impact?

Mac Jones has agreed to a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, marking a return to a team that nearly drafted him in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jones, who brings valuable backup experience, joins the 49ers after previous stints with the Patriots and Jaguars. He will now provide depth behind starting quarterback Brock Purdy.

The move comes four years after San Francisco traded three first-round picks to secure the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 draft. At the time, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was weighing between Jones and Trey Lance. Ultimately, the team chose Lance, who was later traded to the Cowboys in 2023 after a series of injuries and struggles in Shanahan's offensive system. Purdy has since solidified himself as the starter, leaving room for Jones to fill the backup role.

Jones, who was drafted by the Patriots at No. 15 overall, had a strong rookie season in 2021, starting all 17 games and leading New England to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. However, after offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left, Jones’ performance declined, and he was eventually replaced as the starter and traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the Jaguars, he started seven games, throwing for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Now with the 49ers, Jones will offer experienced backup support for Purdy. After Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen left in free agency, the 49ers needed a reliable option, and Jones fits the bill. While he will likely serve as a backup, his early success and experience could make him a valuable addition to the 49ers' quarterback room.

Jones will also have the opportunity to work under Shanahan’s offensive system, which has helped quarterbacks like Purdy succeed. If Jones can adapt to the system and recapture his rookie form, he could become an important asset for the team.
