Sunita Williams' Return Delayed Again as NASA Postpones SpaceX Crew-10 Launch: What We Know So Far

Sunita Williams' Return Delayed Again as NASA Postpones SpaceX Crew-10 Launch: What We Know So Far

The return of NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore has been further delayed due to the postponement of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission launch. This delay affects the return timeline for the two astronauts, who have been waiting for months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Here's what we know so far.

Crew-10 Launch Delay: Impact on Williams and Wilmore's Return
Crew-10, the mission designed to replace Crew-9, which includes astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, has been delayed. The launch delay means that Crew-9, currently "stranded" on the ISS, will not be able to return to Earth until Crew-10 launches and reaches the station.

Earlier, NASA indicated that Crew-9's return was contingent on Crew-10’s departure, making the successful launch of Crew-10 crucial for their long-awaited homecoming. The astronauts have been aboard the ISS for nearly nine months, following a trip on Boeing’s Starliner, which faced technical issues.

Why Was the Crew-10 Mission Postponed?
NASA's launch commentator, Derrol Nail, explained that a critical issue with the hydraulic system on the ground side caused the delay. However, he clarified that both the rocket and spacecraft were functioning correctly. The problem arose less than four hours before the planned liftoff from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

New Launch Date for Crew-10
NASA has set a new potential launch window for Crew-10, with the next opportunity being no earlier than 7:26 p.m. EDT on March 13. If the launch proceeds on March 13, the docking of Crew-10 with the ISS is expected at 11:30 p.m. EDT on March 14, with favorable weather conditions predicted by the U.S. Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron.

Will Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore's Return Be Affected?
With Crew-10 now delayed, NASA has indicated that Crew-9's return will also shift. The initial return date for Crew-9 was scheduled for March 16, but with the delay, it will now likely occur on March 17 or March 18, depending on when Crew-10 reaches the ISS.

If the launch takes place on March 13 or 14, Crew-9’s departure is expected no earlier than 9:05 a.m. EST on March 17.

What’s Next for the Starliner and SpaceX?
The Starliner, built by Boeing under a $4.5 billion contract with NASA, was designed to compete with SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule. However, Starliner has faced significant engineering and cost challenges since its development began in 2019, putting it far behind the highly successful Crew Dragon, which has been NASA’s primary spacecraft for crew missions since 2020.

The delay in the Crew-10 launch highlights ongoing issues with Starliner's development, while SpaceX's Crew Dragon continues to perform reliably.
