At the start of the Champions Trophy 2025, India’s cricket team was in a rough patch. Losses to Sri Lanka in an ODI series, New Zealand in a Test series at home, and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy raised concerns, even among the most devoted Indian supporters, about the team’s future. However, India made a remarkable comeback, securing a thrilling four-wicket win over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final.

Amidst the excitement of the victory, speculation around the retirement of key players like Kohli and Rohit was in full swing. Though there were no immediate retirement announcements, Kohli’s comments suggested the team is in great hands moving forward.

“It’s been amazing. After a tough Australian tour, we wanted to bounce back and win a big tournament, and winning the Champions Trophy feels incredible. There’s so much talent in the dressing room, and everyone is pushing to improve their game. We’re happy to support them and share our experience. That’s what makes this Indian team so strong,” Kohli said after the victory.

“These are the moments you play for—under pressure, stepping up when it matters. Everyone has contributed at some point, whether it was with the bat or ball. The hard work in practice has paid off, and it feels amazing to win.”

Kohli also expressed confidence in the future of the team: “When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better place. I believe we have a squad that’s ready to take on the world for the next eight years. Shubman has been outstanding, Shreyas has played brilliant knocks, KL has finished games, and Hardik has been superb with the bat.”

Commenting on New Zealand’s performance, Kohli said, “They’re amazing. Despite having a smaller talent pool, they execute their plans so well and keep playing a brand of cricket that always keeps them in the game. They’re always attacking and supportive of their bowlers. Credit to them—they’re easily the best fielding unit. It’s tough to see my good friend Kane Williamson on the losing side, but they always do the basics well, which is what makes them so competitive.”
