Disney's $1 Billion Animated Movie Sequel Now Streaming on Disney+ 13 Months After Major Overhaul

Disney's $1 Billion Animated Movie Sequel Now Streaming on Disney+ 13 Months After Major Overhaul

Moana 2 is now streaming on Disney+ after a successful theatrical run last Thanksgiving. The sequel, led by Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, who reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, was originally conceived as a TV series. However, the project was transformed into a feature film following a significant change in direction.

The sequel delves deeper into Polynesian mythology and introduces new gods and demigods, offering a fun and adventurous story for the whole family. Following its theatrical debut, Moana 2 quickly became one of the highest-grossing films of 2024, with a live-action adaptation already in the works. However, the film’s release path and story were drastically altered before it became the massive success it is today.

Moana 2’s Box Office Triumph

Moana 2 opened in theaters on November 27, 2024, and immediately captivated audiences. The film grossed nearly $139.8 million in its domestic opening weekend, with international earnings pushing the total higher (via Box Office Mojo). By the end of the holiday weekend, it had racked up an impressive $225.2 million domestically, setting a Thanksgiving weekend record and coming close to the domestic gross of the original Moana.

The film continued to dominate the box office into December, holding the top spot for several weeks before it was overtaken. As of now, Moana 2 has earned $459.9 million domestically and $596.5 million internationally, bringing its total to $1.05 billion. This makes it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2024 and one of the highest-grossing animated films and sequels ever.

Moana 2's Transformation from TV Series to Movie

Originally, Disney had planned for Moana 2 to be a TV series, as part of a larger strategy to expand its original content on Disney+. The series was in production until February 2024, when Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the decision to switch the project to a feature film. The storyline, which had been developed for the show, was condensed to fit a movie format, and animation work began shortly after the format change was made.

The decision to transition to a movie made sense given the success of the first Moana film in theaters. While Moana 2 has elements of a TV show, it has clearly succeeded as a feature film, with Disney capitalizing on the potential for another box office hit.

Continued Success for Disney+

Now available on Disney+, Moana 2 is poised to enjoy additional success. The original Moana became the most-streamed movie of all time by December 2024, with over 1 billion hours watched. With the sequel’s even greater box office success, it is expected to surpass the original in streaming numbers as well.

Animated films often perform well over time due to their strong appeal to younger audiences, who tend to rewatch their favorites, and the steady influx of new viewers discovering them. Moana 2 is expected to enjoy similar long-term popularity, especially with the upcoming live-action version.

With its theatrical success and a promising future on Disney+, Moana 2 has proven itself to be another hit for Disney, cementing the franchise's lasting appeal.
