The Los Angeles Chargers have announced the signing of former Philadelphia Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton.

Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, some speculated that the Eagles might select an offensive lineman with a high pick, depending on how the draft unfolded. However, they opted for two top cornerbacks instead, and afterward, Howie Roseman brought Becton in on a one-year deal.

Becton spent four seasons with the New York Jets, where he initially sought to play left tackle. However, he was open to a new role in Philadelphia and competed for the starting right guard spot in training camp, ultimately winning the job over second-year player Tyler Steen. Becton went on to have a career-reviving season, contributing significantly to one of the best single-season performances by a running back in NFL history.

While known for his dominance in the run game, Becton also excelled in pass protection and continued to improve his play on the interior as the season progressed. Although the Eagles would have liked to keep Becton, they are already heavily invested in players like Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Lane Johnson, and soon-to-be-paid Cam Jurgens.

To fill the void left by Becton, the Eagles have in-house options including Steen, newly acquired Kenyon Green, and second-year player Trevor Keegan. They may also address the position in the upcoming draft.

Contract details for Becton’s deal with the Chargers have not yet been disclosed, but it's expected that he will qualify for the comp pick formula. We’ll provide updates once the financial terms are available.
