Wheesung's Death: Police Investigate Possible Suicide or Drug Overdose in Korean R&B Star’s Passing

South Korean R&B and ballad singer Wheesung, whose real name was Choi Whee Sung, was found dead at 43 in his Seoul apartment on March 10. Police are investigating the cause of his death, considering the possibilities of suicide or a drug overdose.

Emergency responders were called to Wheesung’s residence in the Gwangjin District at 6:29 p.m. following a call from his family. Upon arrival, they discovered him in cardiac arrest, and despite medical efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities have stated that there is no evidence of foul play or a break-in, but they are exploring the possibility of suicide and whether drugs played a role. Investigators are looking into whether Wheesung left a note or other details that might clarify the circumstances. Police also noted that a significant amount of time had passed before his body was found. Further investigations are ongoing.

Wheesung, born in February 1982, was one of South Korea’s most renowned vocalists, celebrated for his deep, soulful voice and emotional ballads. He launched his solo career in 2002 with his debut album Like A Movie, quickly establishing himself as a versatile singer and songwriter. Hits like Insomnia (2009) and Heartsore Story (2011) became classics, influencing a generation of artists.

In recent years, Wheesung faced personal and legal challenges. In 2021, he was given a two-year suspended prison sentence for the illegal use of propofol, an anesthetic often misused recreationally. He was found to have illegally obtained the drug between September and November 2019, spending about 6.5 million won (approximately $4,468 USD).

Before that, in 2020, Wheesung made headlines after being found unconscious multiple times due to an overdose of etomidate, a sedative similar to propofol. This raised concerns about his health and personal struggles.

Despite these difficulties, Wheesung had been preparing for a return to the stage. He was scheduled to perform with fellow ballad singer KCM at a concert in Daegu on March 15. Just days before his death, on March 6, he posted on social media, saying, "Diet over. See you on March 15," expressing excitement for the performance.

His sudden passing has left fans and fellow musicians in shock, with many paying tribute to his contributions to Korean R&B and ballads.
