Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has repeatedly clashed with President Donald Trump over his refusal to toe the party line.
The Kentucky lawmaker is known for breaking ranks with both his party and its leadership, often casting a lone "no" vote on key issues. Most recently, he stood firm in opposing a spending bill proposed by House Republican leaders, which is scheduled for a vote Tuesday afternoon. This bill is crucial to keeping the government funded and operational beyond Friday.
Massie, staying true to his pattern, has stated that he will vote “no” on the latest spending bill. “Unless I get a lobotomy Monday that causes me to forget what I’ve witnessed the past 12 years,” Massie wrote on social media Sunday, “I’ll be a NO on the CR this week.”
In response, Trump took to social media, expressing his frustration with Massie’s defiance. “HE SHOULD BE PRIMARIED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday night. “I will lead the charge against him. He’s just another GRANDSTANDER, who’s too much trouble, and not worth the fight.”
Who is Thomas Massie?
Massie, 54, has represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012, an area in the northern part of the state near Cincinnati.
A staunch fiscal conservative, Massie has frequently opposed budget bills, arguing that they do not sufficiently address the nation’s growing deficit. He’s known for wearing a lapel pin that displays the constantly rising federal debt.
Facing Threats Before
Trump has previously criticized Massie, accusing him of grandstanding. In 2020, Massie forced Congress members to return to Washington for an in-person vote on a COVID-19 relief package, prompting Trump to call him a “third-rate grandstander” and a “disaster for America,” even calling for his ousting.
Despite this, Kentucky Republicans did not show interest in replacing Massie, and he won his 2020 GOP primary with ease.
Massie doesn’t appear concerned about Trump’s latest attacks. On social media Tuesday, he responded, “POTUS is spending his day attacking me and Canada. The difference is, Canada will eventually cave.”
Massie’s Opposition Could Be Problematic for Republicans
If Massie holds firm in his opposition, House Speaker Mike Johnson cannot afford to lose any other members of his caucus. While Massie seems most resolute in his opposition, other Republicans have also raised concerns about the spending bill, adding to the uncertainty for House leadership.
