"Lilo & Stitch" Trailer: Disney’s Live-Action Remake Brings the Mischievous Blue Alien to Life

"Lilo & Stitch" Trailer: Disney’s Live-Action Remake Brings the Mischievous Blue Alien to Life

In the first full-length trailer for Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo makes a wish upon a shooting star — and ends up with an unexpected friend in the form of Stitch, a chaotic blue extraterrestrial creature.

The trailer offers a glimpse of the live-action reboot, where Lilo, feeling isolated, wishes for a companion after seeing a glowing comet streak across the night sky. Her wish is granted when she encounters Stitch, a dog-like alien created for destruction.

Mirroring the plot of the original 2002 animated movie, the story follows Lilo, an orphan raised by her older sister Nani. Lilo forms a special bond with Stitch (aka Experiment 626) based on the Hawaiian concept of "ohana," which emphasizes family and the idea that no one is left behind or forgotten.

In the trailer, Nani tells Lilo, "He is your responsibility. Got it?" to which Lilo responds, "We promise!" Despite their promise, Stitch is bent on wreaking havoc in the Hawaiian paradise, honking at cars, tossing a CD (remember those?) at moving vehicles, and even destroying a sandcastle. Accompanied by Elvis Presley’s “You’re the Devil in Disguise” and “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,” the trailer shows Stitch’s wild antics, from guzzling liquid from a lava lamp to taking a joyride in a golf cart.

Though Stitch is fully aware of his mischief, telling Lilo, "Stitch bad," Lilo offers him some wise words for such a young girl: “Sometimes, family isn’t perfect. That doesn’t mean they aren’t good.”

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), Lilo & Stitch features a cast that includes Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Zach Galifianakis, Sydney Agudong, Billy Magnussen, and Courtney B. Vance. Chris Sanders, who co-directed the original 2002 film, returns to voice Stitch.

Lilo & Stitch hits theaters on May 23, marking Disney’s second live-action remake of the year, following Snow White, which opens in March. Other Disney classics, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, Dumbo, and The Little Mermaid, have also received live-action adaptations in recent years, with varying commercial success.
