WATCH: Lamine Yamal Scores Brilliant Goal for Barcelona Against Benfica
Lamine Yamal makes history as the youngest player to score and assist in a Champions League match, helping Barcelona secure a spot in the quarter-finals with a win over Benfica.
Lamine Yamal continues to exceed expectations.
The 17-year-old Barcelona star made Champions League history on Tuesday by becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in the competition, as Barcelona defeated Benfica to advance to the quarter-finals.
Yamal's assist was a piece of brilliance—charging toward the Benfica box before delivering a perfectly-weighted pass to Raphinha, who volleyed the ball into the net.
Moments later, Yamal added a stunning goal of his own, curling a shot from the edge of the box into the far corner, beyond the goalkeeper.
"His goal was incredible," Raphinha said. "It perfectly illustrates what Lamine is—a player of extraordinary talent and quality."
Barcelona’s 3-1 victory on the night gave them a 4-1 aggregate win, setting up a quarter-final matchup with either Borussia Dortmund or Lille. Manager Hansi Flick praised Yamal's contribution.
“Lamine hadn’t scored in over a month, so he’s thrilled with this important goal for us,” Flick said. “We’re all happy for him—he’s a fantastic player and a great kid.”
Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves compared Yamal’s rise to that of Wayne Rooney, who made an impact as a teenager at Everton.
"I’ve never seen a 17-year-old be this consistent," Hargreaves said. "Rooney was exceptional, but this kid is phenomenal. He scores, creates, and makes it look effortless—the best 17-year-old I’ve seen."
Yamal has already played 50 games for Barcelona last season and has made 36 appearances this term. However, former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman warned against overexertion.
“You have to be cautious, because we've seen what happened with Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Gavi, who all suffered injuries at a young age,” McManaman said.
“Barcelona knows how to develop young players, but keeping them injury-free is crucial. He’s too valuable to be sidelined.”
