Dawn Robinson Opens Up About Living in Her Car for Nearly 3 Years | Here's Why

Singer Dawn Robinson revealed that she has been living in her car for almost three years. The former En Vogue member shared her journey in a YouTube vlog titled Your New Life Is In the Scary, which she posted on March 11. In the video, she opened up about the struggles that led her to this unique lifestyle. “I have been living in my car for the past three—almost three years,” Robinson shared around the 2:30-minute mark.

The 58-year-old explained that she initially moved in with her parents in Las Vegas in 2020. However, tensions with her mother grew, and Robinson recalled feeling like she was constantly being targeted. “A lot of her anger, she was taking out on me... I was her target all the time,” Robinson said. “I can't deal with this.” She briefly stayed with a co-manager in Los Angeles, followed by a period in a hotel for eight months. After struggling to find an apartment, Robinson became interested in living in her vehicle.

She described her car-dwelling experience as a form of "freedom." “I felt free. I felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt like it was the right thing to do. I didn’t regret it,” Robinson said. She also mentioned that many celebrities, including the late Marvin Gaye, have lived in their cars as well.

Dawn Robinson's Career

Dawn Robinson started her career as a founding member of the iconic R&B/Pop group En Vogue in 1989. En Vogue became one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. After leaving En Vogue, Robinson joined the neo-soul group Lucy Pearl, which released a platinum-selling debut album in 2000, featuring hits like "Dance Tonight" and "Don't Mess with My Man."

In 2002, Robinson released her solo debut album Dawn, which included the hit single "Envious." She rejoined En Vogue for a tour in 2005 but left again due to dissatisfaction with the management and compensation. She returned for their 20th Anniversary Tour in 2008 but left once more in 2011. Robinson later appeared on the first season of R&B Divas: Los Angeles in 2013.

Throughout her career, Robinson has sold over 11 million records and earned numerous accolades, including two American Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award, seven MTV Video Music Awards, four Soul Train Music Awards, and eight Grammy nominations.
