From 'Islam Conversion' to 'Religious Discrimination': Danish Kaneria Launches New Attack on Pakistan Cricket
Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has once again raised accusations of discrimination during his playing career, revisiting his earlier claims of religious bias within the team. Around six years ago, Shoaib Akhtar made headlines when he revealed that some players refused to share food with Kaneria due to his Hindu religion.
Kaneria has previously accused Shahid Afridi of urging him to convert to Islam, an issue that has surfaced again in his latest remarks. Speaking out in 2023, Kaneria recalled how Afridi and other players made his life difficult by refusing to share meals with him. He claimed that they discussed religious conversion, but Kaneria, proud of both his Hindu faith and Pakistani identity, refused to comply.
“I never made an issue of it,” Kaneria said in a 2019 interview with Samaa TV. “I just focused on my cricket and delivering victories for Pakistan. I am a proud Hindu and Pakistani, and I don’t want to portray our cricket fraternity negatively. Many people supported me regardless of my religion.”
However, Kaneria’s latest allegations have added fuel to the fire. In a 2023 interview, he claimed that Afridi repeatedly pressured him to convert, causing significant personal and professional difficulties. Kaneria said, "Inzamam-ul-Haq supported me a lot and was the only captain who stood by me. But Afridi and many others troubled me. They used to talk about conversion, but my religion is everything to me."
Kaneria also criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), accusing them of neglecting his career because of his Hindu identity. “The PCB didn’t support me because I was Hindu,” he remarked. “I could have broken all the records, but they knew they couldn’t drop me based on my performance, so they just ignored me. Pakistan had never seen a Hindu rise through the ranks."
These latest accusations follow previous ones, where Kaneria claimed that Afridi’s objections to him being part of the team were rooted in religious bias. Afridi responded, defending his actions by questioning Kaneria's character. "If I had treated him badly, why didn’t he complain to the PCB or his department?" Afridi said, adding, “Kaneria is giving interviews to our enemy country, which could stir religious sentiments.”
It remains to be seen whether Kaneria’s new claims will provoke further responses from Pakistani cricketers or politicians, especially considering the sensitive nature of religious topics in the context of ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan.
