Broncos Strengthen Defense with Key Free-Agent Signings

The Denver Broncos have made strategic moves to bolster their defense, highlighted by the addition of former San Francisco 49ers players Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga. These key signings have helped solidify the team's defensive lineup, though the situation regarding tight end Evan Engram remains uncertain.

The Broncos kicked off a busy 24-hour period of free-agent activity on Sunday night with a dinner meeting for tight end Evan Engram at Shanahan's. Engram spent Monday at the team's headquarters meeting with coaches and staff. While such visits often lead to immediate deals, Engram left without a contract, with sources indicating that negotiations are still ongoing, though the lack of agreement is seen as a somewhat negative sign.

However, while some Broncos staff focused on Engram, other team members secured a key re-signing. Defensive tackle D.J. Jones, a starting player, was re-signed to a three-year, $39 million contract. Additionally, the Broncos made significant moves on Monday by reaching agreements with two standout defensive players from the San Francisco 49ers: safety Talanoa Hufanga and inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Both players had stellar seasons in 2022 but dealt with injuries in 2024, which allowed the Broncos to secure them at a more favorable price.

Hufanga, a first-team All-Pro in 2022, suffered a torn ACL in 2023 and faced a wrist injury in 2024. Despite these setbacks, the Broncos secured him for a three-year deal worth up to $45 million, with $20 million guaranteed. His effective annual value is likely between $10 million and $13 million. In contrast, safety Tre'von Moehrig received a $17 million per-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Greenlaw, who missed much of 2021 due to a groin injury, bounced back with impressive seasons in 2022 and 2023, recording 127 and 120 tackles, respectively. He suffered a torn Achilles in the final game of 2023 but returned late last season, only to strain his calf. Despite being injury-prone, Greenlaw signed with the Broncos for $11.3 million annually, a much more affordable deal compared to the $15 million per year contract the Jets gave to linebacker Jamien Sherwood.

In the unpredictable nature of free agency, the Broncos saw both wins and losses. The team hoped to re-sign key special teamer Tremon Smith but lost him to the Houston Texans, who also showed interest in Greenlaw before the linebacker ultimately chose the Broncos.

Other notable moves for the Broncos included re-signing backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, long snapper Mitch Fraboni, and reserve offensive tackle Matt Peart. The team is also in discussions to bring back punter Riley Dixon. On the flip side, linebacker Cody Barton (Titans), quarterback Zach Wilson (Dolphins), and running back Javonte Williams (Cowboys) all moved on to other teams. The Broncos chose not to pursue re-signing these players.

As is often the case in free agency, the Broncos experienced both victories and setbacks, further shaping their roster for the upcoming season.
