Lionel Messi’s Argentina Welcomes Back Key Player for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers Against Brazil and Uruguay

Lionel Messi’s Argentina Welcomes Back Key Player for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers Against Brazil and Uruguay

As the first international break of 2025 approaches, Lionel Messi is set to rejoin the Argentina national team after a five-month absence. With crucial World Cup Qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay on the horizon, Argentina has regained a vital defensive player.

Currently at the top of the standings, Argentina faces a challenging week, with matches against second-place Uruguay and a Brazil squad boosted by Neymar’s return. To tackle these tough fixtures, coach Lionel Scaloni will rely on his strongest squad, which now includes a key player who is ready to contribute once again.

Cristian Romero, Argentina's standout center-back, is returning for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. The Tottenham Hotspur defender has recovered from a muscle injury that kept him sidelined for over three months and is now fit for international duty.

Romero suffered a quadriceps muscle tear on December 8, initially expected to be out for six weeks. However, setbacks during his rehabilitation delayed his recovery and return to play. His first match back came in a 61-minute appearance against Bournemouth, marking the end of a challenging recovery process.

His return is especially important for Argentina, as Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez remains unavailable due to an ACL injury. Fully recovered, Romero is set to partner with Nicolas Otamendi in the heart of Argentina’s defense.

Romero Opens Up About His Recovery Journey

Throughout the season, Romero has battled persistent injury troubles, but this most recent setback proved to be particularly frustrating as his recovery kept getting delayed. After finally making his return to action, the Argentine defender shared a heartfelt message on social media.

“After a difficult period full of challenges, I’m back with the group and happy to be able to help the team,” Romero wrote on his X account, expressing his eagerness to support Tottenham's recovery as well.

He also expressed gratitude to Argentina’s medical team for their assistance during his rehabilitation: “I’m thankful to the physios of Argentina for guiding me through this tough time and helping me get back on the pitch where I’m so happy. Thanks to everyone for the constant support.”
