New Documentary ‘Stan Lee: The Final Chapter’ Uncovers the Scandal Surrounding the Final Years of the Comic Legend's Life
A new documentary, Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, explores the troubled final years of the legendary comic book creator, Stan Lee, offering an intimate look at the exploitation and mistreatment he endured before his death. The film includes never-before-seen footage that sheds light on the tumultuous circumstances surrounding Lee's last years.
Lee, the mastermind behind Marvel’s iconic characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk, passed away in November 2018 in a state of financial ruin, surrounded by questionable figures. The documentary reveals how Lee's signature and memorabilia were turned into valuable assets, much of which never reached Lee or his family.
Filmmaker Jon Bolerjack, an international comic book dealer, spent the final four years of Lee’s life traveling with him to conferences worldwide, capturing exclusive footage. Bolerjack reveals the betrayal Lee faced from those closest to him, profiting from his declining health and fame.
In 2018, just before his death, Lee filed a lawsuit against his former business manager and attorney, accusing them of exploiting him after the death of his wife, Joan Lee.
Bolerjack and his team have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the documentary, which includes interviews with Lee's former staff and close associates. Lee had given Bolerjack his blessing to use the footage to share his story with the world.
To complete the project, the producers are launching a Kickstarter campaign starting today, with plans to release the documentary by the end of the year. More details are available here: Kickstarter Link.
“I was incredibly fortunate to know, befriend, and travel with Stan Lee, one of my lifelong heroes,” says Bolerjack. “He entrusted me with capturing his final years and wanted me to share this footage after he was gone. After witnessing how some people close to him betrayed him in his weakened state, I felt it was my responsibility to tell this heartbreaking story.”
The documentary also features interviews with other comic book legends, including Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld and Roy Thomas, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics.
Mark Waid, a renowned comic book writer, expressed, “I knew Stan wasn’t treated well in his final years, but I had no idea how badly he was exploited. This is a message that people need to hear. It's not based on hearsay—it’s firsthand accounts from those who were there.”
Tyler Kirkham, a best-selling comic artist, also weighed in: “Seeing how Stan was taken advantage of was painful. It’s important for fans to see this documentary, especially if you’re part of the pop culture community. Stan Lee’s legacy deserves to be remembered in full, and this film provides critical behind-the-scenes insights that the world needs to see.”
