Today, on March 14, the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, presented its 2025-26 budget in the state assembly, marking a significant financial move ahead of the 2026 state election. The budget saw large allocations for flagship welfare schemes, including the fare-free bus travel initiative for women.
In a lively assembly session, the main opposition AIADMK staged a walkout after attempting to raise concerns about alleged corruption in the state-run liquor corporation, TASMAC, following Enforcement Directorate searches linked to the company.
Key Announcements by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu:
- The fare-free bus service for women, a major welfare initiative, has seen an increase in usage, with 65% of women now using the service compared to 40% previously. An average of 50 lakh women use the service daily, contributing to a total of 642 crore trips. The state has allocated ₹3,600 crore for the scheme in the 2025-26 budget.
- The "Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam," which provides ₹1,000 per month to 1.15 crore women, has received an allocation of ₹13,807 crore. Additionally, the government will open ten new ‘Thozhi’ working women’s hostels at a cost of ₹77 crore.
- The budget also expedited plans for a new airport in Parandur near Chennai.
The Budget session was broadcast live at 100 locations in Chennai, including prominent spots like Central Railway Station and Marina Beach.

- ₹310 crore has been allocated for a new 3-kilometer flyover in Velachery to ease traffic congestion.
- The restoration of the Adyar river is nearing completion with ₹1,500 crore invested in the project over 15 months.

- Plans are in motion to develop a new city over 2,000 acres near Chennai.
- The Porur Metro line is set to open to the public in December 2025.
