USDA Offers Relief from Record-High Egg Prices, But Be Prepared for Another Price Surge

USDA Offers Relief from Record-High Egg Prices, But Be Prepared for Another Price Surge

Despite a recent decrease in prices, egg costs could rise again due to increased demand for the Easter season, warns Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins shared some positive news for consumers struggling with sky-high egg prices. On Tuesday, she told FOX Business that the price per dozen has dropped by an average of $1.85.

Rollins explained, "We believe the market has reacted to our plan that we rolled out on February 26th," referring to the five-pronged approach introduced by the Trump administration last month to "immediately" reduce the cost of eggs.

The plan includes short-term imports, deregulation, increased investments in biosecurity, repopulating fowl, and funding research on vaccines and therapeutic treatments for avian flu.

Egg Shortage Results in Odd Pricing Trends

While prices are dropping, Rollins emphasized that the battle against avian flu remains ongoing, warning that it’s a long-term effort.

However, with Easter approaching, Rollins cautioned that the recent price relief may not last, as holiday demand could cause another spike in egg prices.

"We’re entering the peak price season for eggs even without the avian bird flu, and that's due to Easter approaching," she said.

She reassured consumers that the administration is actively addressing the issue.

"We are on it. We have a major plan with five key components. The good news is that egg prices seem to be coming down, with a $1.85 decrease per carton being significant, but there's still a long way to go."
