Change is in the air for the Commanders. After a strong season under head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels, where they fell short to the Eagles in the NFC Championship, the team has been looking to make key additions to maintain their momentum. Earlier, the Commanders brought in tight ends Zach Ertz and John Bates, bolstering the roster. But on Monday, March 10, they took it up a notch with a major move — acquiring Laremy Tunsil from the Texans, led by CJ Stroud.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is also seeking fresh talent, and to make room, they traded their star offensive tackle, Tunsil, to the Commanders in a deal that included multiple draft picks from this year and beyond. While some fans questioned the necessity of the trade, the best reaction came from CJ Stroud’s teammate, running back Joe Mixon, who succinctly responded, “Hell nah ” Mixon will certainly miss the protection and blocking that Tunsil provided, which helped him excel both as a runner and a receiver.
In addition to Tunsil, the Commanders also received a 2025 fourth-round pick, while the Texans gained a 2025 third-round pick, a 2025 seventh-round pick, and a 2026 second and fourth-round pick. This trade could potentially benefit the Texans more in the long run, but Tunsil’s presence on the Commanders’ offensive line will be a game-changer for quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Tunsil, who has earned multiple Pro Bowl selections during his time with the Dolphins and Texans, is entering the final year of his three-year, $75 million contract. His strong pass protection will be crucial for Daniels as he leads the Commanders’ offense in 2025. Tunsil’s addition places him among the notable new faces on the team, joining other key players like 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Daniels, who has quickly emerged as a leader in the league despite being just 24, was thrilled about the move. Upon hearing the news, he welcomed Tunsil with an enthusiastic message on social media, writing, “Welcome to the squad!!! @kingtunsil,” signaling his excitement for the new protector on the line.
With this trade, the Commanders are hoping that Tunsil’s presence will be the missing piece they need to make a championship run. Will it be the move that propels them to a title? Only time will tell.
