Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are back to swap bodies once more in Freakier Friday, reuniting as the iconic mother-daughter duo. Disney has released the much-anticipated trailer for this sequel to the 2003 hit, which picks up years after Tess and Anna first switched bodies. This time, however, there's a new multigenerational twist that promises to turn things upside down once again.
The trailer reveals that Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) are in for more chaos, as they find themselves caught up in the same predicament, only now it involves even more people. Anna, now with a daughter (played by Julia Butters) and a soon-to-be stepdaughter (Sophia Hammons), must navigate the complexities of merging two families. But things take a wild turn when the body swap happens—this time, it’s a four-way switch!
Chad Michael Murray reprises his role as Jake, appearing towards the end of the trailer riding his bike. Other returning cast members from the 2003 film include Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. New additions to the cast include Manny Jacinto and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
The official synopsis of Freakier Friday reads: “Years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might strike twice.”
The original Freaky Friday, based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel, followed the story of a widowed mother preparing for her wedding while her daughter, a musician, faced a pivotal gig. After receiving a mystical fortune cookie, their bodies swap, forcing them to understand each other in a new light. This film was itself a remake of the 1976 classic starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris.
Disney officially announced the sequel in March 2024, with Curtis and Lohan revealing the first look and the title at D23 last year. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Freakier Friday is set to release on August 8, marking Lindsay Lohan’s big-screen comeback.
