Vanessa Kirby, Star of 'Mission Impossible' and 'The Crown,' Joins the MCU in 'Fantastic Four'
Oscar-nominated actress Vanessa Kirby, renowned for her roles in Netflix's The Crown and the Mission: Impossible and Fast & Furious franchises, is making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The highly anticipated trailer, released on Tuesday, gives fans their first glimpse at this new adaptation of Marvel’s iconic "first family," originally introduced in the 1960s comics. Kirby stars alongside Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (the Thing), and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch).
Kirby takes over the role of Sue Storm, previously portrayed by Jessica Alba in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films and Kate Mara in the 2015 reboot.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25. Here’s what we know about the movie:
What is Fantastic Four: First Steps about?
The film follows the Fantastic Four—four astronauts who gain extraordinary abilities from cosmic rays. The trailer features a glimpse of the team, including Sue's line, "Whatever life throws at us, we’ll face it together. As a family." The adventure ahead includes the helpful robot H.E.R.B.I.E., the Fantasticar, and the giant, planet-devouring villain Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson), who sets his sights on New York City.
The Fantastic Four face their toughest challenge yet, balancing their heroic duties with family loyalty. They must protect Earth from Galactus, a space god, and his mysterious herald, the Silver Surfer (played by Julia Garner). With Galactus’ plan to consume the planet, things quickly become very personal for the team.
Set in a retro-futuristic, 1960s-inspired world, the film promises an exciting new chapter for the MCU.
Vanessa Kirby’s Rise to Fame
Kirby gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of The Crown, which earned her critical acclaim and several award nominations. From there, she transitioned into high-profile franchises and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Pieces of a Woman (2020). In the film, she plays Martha, a woman who experiences a devastating home birth and copes with profound grief alongside her husband, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf.
Kirby has spoken about the intense anxiety she felt while preparing for both the role of Princess Margaret and Martha, comparing the fear she felt in each to be equally overwhelming. "I had to just keep breathing and go, OK, one foot in front of the other," she said, reflecting on the challenges of portraying such iconic and emotionally charged roles.
