Santorini Faces Mass Evacuation Amid Rising Earthquake Concerns
Santorini and nearby Greek islands are experiencing a series of tremors, prompting many residents and visitors to evacuate the area. These frequent shakes have raised concerns of a potential larger earthquake, with scientists describing them as part of a continuous and intense sequence.
According to AP, emergency response teams have been dispatched to Santorini, and schools on four nearby islands have been closed until Friday as a precautionary measure.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking from Brussels during a European meeting, addressed the situation, stating, “We are dealing with a very intense geological phenomenon. I urge island residents to remain calm and follow the instructions of the Civil Protection authorities.”
In response to more than 200 underwater earthquakes detected over the past three days, safety measures have been implemented across several popular Aegean Sea islands. Additionally, mobile phone alarms warned of potential rockslides, and loud rumbling was heard as several earthquakes struck.
Greece, located on several fault lines, is regularly affected by seismic activity. On Monday, the strongest tremor yet—a magnitude 4.8 earthquake—struck at 2:17 PM local time.
Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid large indoor gatherings and stay clear of areas prone to rockslides. Hotels were also instructed to drain their swimming pools to prevent structural damage in the event of further tremors.
