NBA News: Brandon Ingram Reportedly Traded to Raptors; Pelicans Acquire Bruce Brown, Additional Assets
After more than five seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, Brandon Ingram is reportedly heading to the Toronto Raptors in a trade deal.
Shams Charania of ESPN broke the news, revealing that the Pelicans are receiving Bruce Brown Jr., Kelly Olynyk, and draft picks in return.
Speculation surrounding Ingram’s future with the Pelicans intensified after their first-round playoff exit to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Ingram struggled during the series, averaging just 14.3 points on 34.5% shooting in the four-game sweep.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks pointed out that New Orleans was in a position where they had to either make roster cuts or allow key free agents, such as Naji Marshall and Jonas Valančiūnas, to depart. Additionally, Ingram was eligible for a four-year, $208 million extension starting the day free agency opened. His overall performance seemed to warrant this deal, as he’s averaged at least 20 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game in every season since joining the Pelicans.
However, Ingram’s playoff struggles, injury history, and New Orleans' financial situation created uncertainty about his future with the team. The 26-year-old hasn’t played more than 64 games in a season since his rookie year in 2016-17. Meanwhile, Zion Williamson, whose own injury issues are well-known, is signed for $163.2 million over the next four years.
The Pelicans, despite showing promise when healthy, have struggled to stay at full strength. They currently hold the worst record in the Western Conference at 12-39. Given the team’s lack of a clear franchise cornerstone and their present situation, trading valuable assets like Ingram seems to be a smart move for the front office.
For the Raptors, Ingram’s arrival is an intriguing addition to their younger roster, which includes players like Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick, and Ja'Kobe Walter. While Ingram is not in the same age range as these players, he was expected to join a contending team, not a Raptors squad in the midst of a rebuild with a 16-35 record.
This raises questions about the Raptors' direction. Do they see Ingram as part of a long-term plan alongside their young core? Or are they viewing some of these young players as potential trade assets for established stars down the line?
While it’s unlikely Barnes will be traded, and it seems probable Ingram will stay with Toronto past free agency this summer, the trade has certainly raised questions about the future of some of the Raptors’ other young contributors.
