Before Final Destination 5 was released in 2011, actor Tony Todd hinted that, if successful, two sequels would be filmed back-to-back. In January 2019, New Line Cinema announced a new installment was in development. Initially, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were tasked with writing the screenplay, which was described as a "re-imagining" of the series. By March 2020, producer Craig Perry revealed that the film would focus on "first responders," including EMTs, firefighters, and police officers. When questioned about its connection to previous films, Perry clarified that the movie would not completely reboot the franchise but would still be considered a Final Destination movie. In October 2020, creator Jeffrey Reddick confirmed that the film had been in development before the COVID-19 pandemic.
In October 2021, Lori Evans Taylor was appointed as the film’s new screenwriter. By January 2022, HBO Max was confirmed as the distributor, and Jon Watts joined as a producer, with Taylor continuing as the screenwriter, co-writing with Guy Busick. That July, Reddick revealed that this installment would deviate from the usual Final Destination formula. In September 2022, Lipovsky and Stein were chosen to direct after they pitched their ideas, with a memorable Zoom meeting that included a staged freak accident, demonstrating their passion for the project. Later that month, Tony Todd officially signed on to reprise his role as William Bludworth, with plans to delve deeper into the character’s backstory.
Filming for the movie was initially planned to occur in Vancouver, British Columbia, from July to October 2023, but production was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Instead, filming took place from March 4 to May 13, 2024, with Christian Sebaldt as the cinematographer. Tim Wynn was hired to compose the film’s score by December 2024.
Release
Final Destination Bloodlines is slated for release in the United States on May 16, 2025. The film was shot in IMAX and will be available in both IMAX and standard formats.
