During the 2025 Grammy Awards, comedian Trevor Noah faced criticism for a controversial joke about Shakira and Colombia, particularly given the backdrop of the U.S. government's intensified immigration crackdown. Hosting the ceremony, Noah quipped that Shakira was “the greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a Class A felony,” referencing Colombia's struggles with crime.

While some in the audience chuckled, others were not amused. Noah also made another insensitive comment about the Grammy voting process, joking that the 13,000 members of the Recording Academy included “20 million illegal immigrants.”

The remarks sparked eye rolls, particularly from rapper Doechii, who won Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, during another joke involving illegal immigrants.

On X (formerly Twitter), many criticized Noah's timing, especially as millions face the threat of deportation in the U.S. Protests against former President Donald Trump's immigration policies were occurring nearby during the ceremony.

One user wrote, “We, the Colombians, are sick of being treated like criminals. #Grammys2025 @Trevornoah, we are waiting for an apology.”

Another tweeted, “Shakira! The only thing out of Colombia that’s not a Class-A Felony. Really, bro? That’s comedy to you? @Trevornoah do better #Grammys2025.”

A third commenter expressed disappointment over his jokes: “That tasteless joke about illegal immigrants was so unnecessary. Do better, Trevor Noah.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, calling his jokes distasteful and unnecessary.

One person commented, “In a time of deep racism and division, and while Colombia is being targeted by the U.S. administration, this attempt at humor from @TrevorNoah was poor.”

Many defended Colombia’s culture and talent, asserting, “Colombia is talent, culture, and resilience. Shakira is one of many who make us shine worldwide. No need for outdated, tone-deaf jokes.”
