Doechii Triumphs Over Eminem and J. Cole to Win Best Rap Album at the Grammys
At the 2025 Grammy Awards, one of the most emotional moments of the evening came when Doechii won her first Grammy for Best Rap Album with her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. The 23-year-old hip-hop sensation, known for her bold style and unique sound, fought back tears as she accepted the prestigious honor.
In her acceptance speech, Doechii reflected on the historical significance of the award, pointing out that the Best Rap Album category had been introduced in 1989. She became only the third woman to ever win in this category, following the legendary Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. She proudly stated, “This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won—Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii,” underscoring how rare and groundbreaking her win was.
Although her victory in the Best Rap Album category was a highlight, Doechii didn’t win in all her nominations. She had also been nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for her track “Nissan Altima,” but lost the latter award to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Despite the setback, Doechii remained resolute.
When she took the mic, her message was especially empowering for young Black girls watching the show. “I know there is a Black girl out there watching, and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project stereotypes onto you… You are exactly who you need to be to get where you are, and I am a testimony to that.” With fierce determination in her eyes, she left a lasting impact on the audience.
In other notable Grammy wins, Sabrina Carpenter made history by earning her first-ever Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album with Short n’ Sweet, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Chappell Roan also took home the Grammy for Best New Artist, with her powerful performance and speech advocating for better treatment of artists by record labels—a message that resonated deeply with those in the industry.
And, of course, there was Beyoncé. In a historic achievement, she became the first Black woman in over fifty years to win a Grammy in the country music category. This milestone proved that her influence transcends genres.
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah, were streamed live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The event was a celebration of artistic expression, reflection, and perseverance, with groundbreaking wins that highlighted diversity and set the stage for a new era in music. The ceremony was available to Indian audiences on Disney+ Hotstar, making it accessible to fans across the globe.
